The title:URBAN INFORMATICS FOR SMART CITY
The main content:
Urban informatics studies the structure,
algorithms, behavior, and interactions of natural and artificial systems in the
urban context, aiming at improving the living standards of mankind. Currently, worldwide
cities face complex and pressing problems, including but not limited to housing,
aging, traffic and environmental pollution. Urban sciences and technologies
also face great challenges like spatial discovery and prediction, dynamic
spatial information extraction, three-dimensional spatial data infrastructure
and uncertainties in spatial big data. To meet the practical and scientific
challenges establishes urban informatics as a potential independent discipline
and a basis for developing smart and sustainable cities.
This presentation firstly introduces
the scientific structure of urban informatics, as well as the real-world and
scientific problems urging the development of this discipline. The presentation
then presents the research and developments of the Lab for Smart City and
Spatial Big Data Analytics, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University to solve the
urban problems and support smart cities. By integrated developments of theories, methods and technologies in GIScience,
remote sensing, satellite positioning, spatial big data analysis, Artificial
Intelligence (AI), urban planning, urban geography, and urban and regional
studies, we have drawn a range of solutions to various aspects of smart cities:
Smart Governance, Smart Mobility, Smart Environment, Smart Living, Smart
Economy and Smart People. The solutions are built on a 3D Geodatabase Framework
and are generic to considerable extents and can be applied and customized to
different cities in the world.
Introduction:
Prof Shi is Chair Professor in Geographic
Information Science (GISci) and remote sensing, Otto Poon Charitable Foundation
Professor in Urban Informatics, Head for Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics,
and Director of Laboratory for Smarty City and Spatial Big Data Analytics, The
Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He obtained his doctoral degree from
University of Osnabrück in Vechta, Germany in 1994.
Prof Shi’s current research interests are
in the areas of GISci, remote sensing and urban informatics, with focusing on
analytics and quality control for spatial big data, object extraction and
change detection from satellite images and LiDAR data, integrated indoor
mapping technology, 3D and dynamic GISci modelling, and Smart City applications
.
Prof Shi served as President of Commission
II for International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (2008-2012),
President for Hong Kong Geographic Information System Association (2001-2003).
He also serves as an editorial board member for a number of international
journals. He has published more than 250 journal articles and 15 books. He
received a number of prestige awards, including an award from International
Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and Natural Science Award from the
State Council, China.
