From May 12 to 14, 2018, the State Key Laboratory of Geo-hazard Prevention and Geo-environment Protection (SKLGP) and the International Research Association on Large Landslides (iRALL) held the 5thInternational Symposium on Mega Earthquake Induced Geo-disasters and Long-term Effects (MEGE 2018), as well as commemorate the 10thanniversary of the Wenchuan earthquake.
In recent years, global climate change, environmental damage and explosive population growth have further aggravated the frequency and impact of geological disasters. Ten years after the Wenchuan earthquake, heavy rainfall has repeatedly triggered a large number of landslides and debris flows. The Wenchuan area is still threatened by various post-earthquake geological disasters. In order to mitigate the long-term disaster chain effect of earthquakes, domestic and foreign scholars have carried out a series of studies on the long-term disaster chain effect of earthquake induced geo-disasters, and have implemented geological disaster risk assessment and risk management measures. The conference aims to provide experts and scholars of worldwide an opportunity to showcase and exchange on their latest research progresses on geological hazard mechanisms and disaster mitigation technologies, aiming to strengthen research and exchange on the occurrence and subsequent effects of geological disasters in strong earthquake areas.
During the conference, 350 experts and scholars from 13 countries (regions) including China, Britain, Japan and Germany attended. And 84 scientific reports were given.
Prof. Cheng Qiangong and some of his team's young teachers, doctoral students, and graduate students attended the academic conference. Dr. Wang Yufeng, a young teacher, gave a lecture report on the topic of “Velocity Dependent Frictional Weakening of Large Rock Avalanche Basal Facies” and won a heated question and discussion at the venue. Li Yan, a Ph.D. student, conducted a poster on the topic of “Liquefaction mitigated by rectangular closed diaphragm walls”.
Prof. Cheng Qiangong was invited to be the chairman of the meeting at the afternoon of May 12. And as a member of iRALL, he attended the iRALL Discussion meeting on the evening of May 13. On the morning of May 13, Prof. Cheng Qiangong, as a member in charge of the sub-project, also participated in the project launch meeting of the national key R&D project “Study on the mechanism and long-term effect of the geological disasters in the strong earthquake mountain area”.
